What is HUID in Jewellery?
Learn about HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) for gold jewellery. Understand the 6-character code, BIS mandates, and how it protects consumers.
The Basics of HUID
HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a 6-character alphanumeric code assigned to every piece of gold jewellery hallmarked in India. Unlike the older hallmarking system which just had the BIS logo, purity grade, and standard marks, HUID is unique to the specific individual piece of jewellery, much like an Aadhaar card for gold.
Why the Government Introduced HUID
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) made HUID mandatory to increase transparency, prevent adulteration, and protect consumers. Before HUID, it was difficult to trace the origin of a gold piece once it left the hallmarking center. With HUID, the entire journey of the jewellery—from the manufacturer to the hallmarking center, to the retailer, and finally to the consumer—is tracked on a central government database.
How Consumers Can Check HUID
Consumers can download the official 'BIS Care' app on their smartphones. By using the 'Verify HUID' feature and entering the 6-character code engraved on their jewellery, they can instantly see the details of the item. The app displays the jeweller's name, the hallmarking center's name, the date of hallmarking, and the exact purity (e.g., 22K916).
Impact on Jewellers
For jewellers, HUID brought a significant operational shift. It required them to register with BIS, send every piece above a certain weight (usually 2 grams) to an Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC), and keep meticulous records. While initially met with resistance due to logistical delays, it has ultimately leveled the playing field by weeding out unorganized players selling under-carat gold.
Managing HUID Inventory
Retailers must now track each HUID number in their inventory. When a piece is sold, the invoice must explicitly mention the HUID. If a piece is altered or melted down, its HUID must be canceled in the system. Using modern jewellery management software allows shops to scan HUIDs via barcode, automatically updating their stock and ensuring that billing is 100% compliant with BIS rules.
